Do you know all there is to know about your hair?
Whether you wear it straight, curly, kinky, long or short, we can all agree that on days where it behaves the way you want it to, you feel like a million dollars. On other days, sometimes a hat needs to be incorporated in your outfit of the day. Additionally, your hair can also show your state of health via its texture, growth rate and even colour!
- Black is the most common hair colour in the world and is a dominant genetic trait.
- Our hair contains information about substances in our bloodstream which includes drugs and is an important piece of forensic evidence.
- Hair is the second fastest growing tissue in the body next to bone marrow.
- Hair can grow all over the body except for the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, eyelids, lips and mucous membranes.
- Going grey prematurely is a genetic predisposition. Thus, if your parents went grey in their teens, you’re very likely to undergo this too.
- Grey hair is the result of DNA damage and build-up of hydrogen peroxide in the follicles causing a disruption in melanin production. This causes the hair growing in to have no melanin which makes it appear white, grey or silver.
- Disorders such as alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease, can cause a person to lose hair on their scalp and other areas of their body. Additionally, other problems such as severe stress, medications, fungal infections, major surgery and even pregnancy and childbirth can cause severe hair loss.
